Here’s a goodie from America’s 1982 album, “View From the Ground”. This song made it to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Ah, 1982—when I was a 90-lb. band geek in high school.
I haven’t thought about this group in a while, then ran across this song tonight when I was looking for something with a magical theme for Halloween and Day of the Dead.
America is one of those bands that I really enjoyed back in the 80′s. They had a really good harmonic sound and catchy melodies with sensible lyrics that I could understand. Then it dawned on me that I couldn’t recall what any of them looked like, because I didn’t own very many records or cassette tapes. (Gawd. Cassettes).
Tonight I spent some wonderfully sidetracked moments on YouTube reliving those days when I listened to the radio and enjoyed songs the old-fashioned way. If I had children, I would be telling them this ancient story so they could laugh at me. The dogs don’t seem to get my stories.
Watching this video and appreciating the simplicity of it —– five guys just playing guitars and singing, nothing else——-made me long for the pre-MTV days, when talent was what got you on the radio and sold some vinyl. Nobody cared what you looked like or what you wore back then. This was a wholesome looking group and such a treat to watch; no big hair metal with makeup and leather pants and pyrotechnics and super-fast video frames that hurt your eyes and distract you from the music. It was just about the music.
I miss that America. The time, the music, the simplicity. Watching this video made me fall in love again with America, the band, and America, my country, of 1982.
What I like about this song in addition to the melody is that it appears to be about magic, but it’s really about a stunning and mesmerizing woman who always seems to get her way and has a devastating effect on her man. There’s a consuming attraction and also a tenderness that has very little to do with magic, but the strength, passion, and powerful effects of real love—–the most powerful magic of all.
Enjoy the vid and the retro trip.
